First identified in 1868 in Nova Scotia by chemist Henry How.

Natural howlite is white with ink-like grey veining, never turquoise.

A calcium borosilicate — softer than quartz at Mohs 3.5.

The stone

Quiet veins, quiet mind.

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide (chemical formula Ca₂B₅SiO₉(OH)₅), part of the borate mineral family. It forms in nodular masses within evaporite deposits, usually chalky white or cream with distinctive grey or black veining that branches across the surface like ink on rice paper. The most significant deposits are in Nova Scotia, Canada, with additional finds in California, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, and Russia. Its softness and porous structure make it a common candidate for dyeing — turquoise-coloured “howlite” is often this stone tinted to imitate the real thing.

The stone was first identified in 1868 by Henry How, a Nova Scotian chemist and geologist, who encountered it in a gypsum quarry near Windsor. Real howlite is recognisable by its matte, almost porcelain surface and the irregular, web-like grey veins running through the white — no two pieces pattern the same way. It has a Mohs hardness of around 3.5, which is softer than quartz or agate, and often carries a faint chalky feel before polishing.

The feeling

For the nights your thoughts are louder than the room.

Howlite is traditionally associated with a settled, clear-headed kind of calm. It has long been worn for quieting mental chatter, for patience in conversations that need it, and kept by the bedside by those who struggle to switch off at night. Think of it as the stone you reach for when your thoughts are louder than the room.

Pairs well with

Soft, cool companions.

Layers easily with clear quartz, moonstone, and soft blue stones like aquamarine or blue lace agate — the cool palette and quiet energy read as one continuous breath.

Care

Softer than it looks.

Howlite is a softer stone (Mohs ~3.5) and porous, so keep it away from perfume, sunscreen, and cleaning products, and never soak it. A brief rinse is fine, but dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth. Store it separately from harder gems like quartz or tourmaline to avoid scratches, and in Singapore’s humidity, wipe it down after wear to keep the surface clean and dull-free.
